About Us and a Little History of St. Augustine
Founded in 1999, by the Solano(a) family, Solano Cycle is St. Augustine's largest and oldest scooter, golf cart, scootcoupe, bicycle, wheelchair, stroller, and mobility chair rental store. Our family is one of Florida's First European Families to leave Spain in 1565 and come to America to settle in St. Augustine, Florida and is one of the oldest-documented families in the history of the United States. We are also part Minorcan. Our Minorcan ancestors were indentured servants in a brutal, failed British agricultural colony in New Smyrna. In fact, you can still see the ancient canals built by them in 1767. In 1768, the surviving Minorcans fled to St. Augustine where they were granted refuge and protection by its governor. Those are just some of the stories of our family.
St. Augustine is rich with Spanish, Minorcan, British, Native, and American history. St. Augustine even had the first free African fort in the New World called Fort Mose. The goverernor of St. Augustine founded Fort Mose for escaped African slaves from the British Colonies. In fact, St. Augustine has three forts, not just one. It has Fort Mose to protect the northern entrance, Fort Matanzas to protect the southern entrance, and Castillo de San Marcos in the city center as the last, and most substantial line of defense. If you get a chance, you should get away from the crowds and visit the other forts.
For those that want some gruesome history of St. Augustine. Matanzas translates to slaugther. The Matanzas River got its name after the Spanish slaughtered the French Hugenots in their attempt to invade St. Augustine in 1565. For those from Jacksonville, FL, you may recongnize the name Jean Ribault (Ribault High School) and Fort Caroline. The French Hugenots established a Fort in Jacksonville called Fort Caroline. Jean Ribault attempted to invade St. Augustine by ship, but was hit by a storm and got stranded at Matanzas Inlet to the south, near where Fort Matanzas stands today. After the Spanish destroyed the unguarded Fort Caroline in present day Jacksonville, they marched south and quickly slaughtered the stranded Hugenot invaders. The French never attempted to colonize Florida again.
If your looking for a fun way to tour our historic St. Augustine, please come by Solano Cycle Rentals of St. Augustine and for a Golf Cart rental, Scooter rental, Electric Bicycle Rental, Mobility Chair rental, Stroller rental, or Wheelchair rental. We would love to have you as a customer.
